Welcome to Family Hospice and Palliative Care


The mission of Family Hospice and Palliative Care is to provide compassionate, quality comfort care that enhances the lives of people with life-limiting illness and their families.

We are a non-profit organization that is entrusted to provide end-of-life care to more patients in Western Pennsylvania than any other hospice. We have earned Joint Commission quality accreditation since 2001.

Oct. 20, 2010: Friends of Hospice Luncheon and Card Party

Friends of Family Hospice and Palliative Care, a fundraising auxiliary, holds an annual card party and luncheon in October. The event features sit-down lunch, door prizes, and a fashion show. Tickets are $25 per person. Reserve your table quickly! This event sells out early. All proceeds benefit Family Hospice. For tickets and information, contact: 412-572-8800.

Camp Healing Hearts: Our seventh annual Camp Healing Hearts for grieving children took place Aug. 14 and provided hope for both children and adults involved. Read The Almanac's story on Camp.

Compassion Sabbath: Enhancing the Clergy's Role in Caring for the Seriously Ill The Center for Compassionate Care was host to Compassion Sabbath on Oct. 13. Compassion Sabbath is an initiative designed to help clergy, and lay people, improve care and quality at the end of life. The keynote address was delivered by The Rev. Dr. Thomas Long of the Candler School of Theology in Atlanta. The event was co-sponsored by the Institute to Enhance Palliative Care and the Coalition for Quality at the End of Life. Photography Award

Quality of Life Program Coordinator Paula Church was awarded second place in the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's 2009 photography competition.
Paula's winning submission, "Mr. M with Portrait", highlights Operation Respect, Family Hospice and Palliative Care's specialized program for Veterans and their families.

Family Hospice Nurse Named "Best of the Best"

September 30, 2009: Mary Jo Kniedler-McLaughlin, RN, has been named one of ten "Best of the Best" nurses in Western Pennsylvania by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
Mary Jo was nominated for this recognition by the companion of a hospice patient under our care.
Congratulations to Mary Jo, who shares this honor with her fellow nurses in acknowledgement of the extraordinary efforts extended each day on behalf of Family Hospice patients and families.

ELNEC Training (End of Life Nursing Consortium):
An educational seminar to provide training in end-of-life nursing care, addressing areas of pain and symptom management, ethics and legal issues, cultural impact, communication issues, and grief and bereavement; provided by a certified ELNEC trainer.

ELNEC-PPC Training (Pediatric Palliative Care):
An educational seminar to provide training in end-of life palliative nursing care for children; provided by a certified ELNEC-PPC trainer.
